Course Description:
The Foundations of Algebra 1 course is ideal for all students who are about to take a whole year Pre-Algebra course for the first time, or for those students entering the first year of a two-year algebra one program. Some students would also benefit from using this class as a review of the vital Pre-Algebra skills before proceeding to Algebra 1.
Participation in this course will provide your student with the distinct advantage of learning the skills needed to succeed in Algebra 1, which is the foundation for all high school math classes. A strong foundation in Algebra 1 will also provide an advantage as students take important assessments such as the PSSA and SAT .
This course will help your child overcome the fear of "fraction phobia" and will help explain the mysteries of decimals, percents, ratios, proportions, divisibility tests and applicable mental math strategies. Other topics scheduled to be introduced include powers and exponents, the order of operations, operations with signed numbers, and solving linear equations. The mathematical vocabulary of these topics will be reinforced to promote success on the PSSA math writing prompts.
